Australian Patients Association Urges Immediate Action to Ban Private Specialists from Charging Hidden Fees

Summary

We’re calling for transparency from doctors around procedural fees in private hospitals to better protect Australian patients from shock out-of-pocket surgical costs

The Australian Patients Association (APA) expresses deep concern over reports in The Age of hidden fees being levied by specialists on patients undergoing procedures in private hospitals, a practice that has left thousands of Australians facing unexpected financial burden.

Recent allegations suggest that numerous medical specialists, including surgeons and anesthetists, have been charging hidden “booking” or “administrative” fees, despite patients being under “no gap” fee arrangements with private health insurers. This practice has resulted in patients paying additional hidden fees and facing undue financial distress and pressure after their hospital admission.

Australian Patients Association Chief Executive Officer, Ms Lisa Robins said “Many Australians have taken out private health insurance to avoid out-of-pocket expenses. These fees are a betrayal of patient trust and it’s incredibly disappointing to see allegations that some specialists are financially exploiting individuals when they are at their most vulnerable.”

“Hidden specialist billing erodes confidence in the system and could deter people from taking up private health insurance. Amid a cost-of-living crisis, patients need to have confidence that they are being billed fairly and ethically by their treating specialist.”

The APA calls upon all health ministers to act swiftly to put an end to these unethical billing practices. It is essential for healthcare providers to uphold transparent billing and for regulatory bodies to protect patients from unforeseen costs.
