Anna Davidson laughs down the phone when asked how the Covid-19 vaccine rollout is going at her clinic in Port Stephens, in New South Wales’s Hunter region.
Then she asks if she can beat her head against the wall.
In a frenetic 10-day period last month, her clinic spent $25,000 transforming her GP super clinic into a potential Covid-19 vaccination powerhouse for the region.
The clinic’s staff bought new specialised vaccine fridges, pushed through a wall to expand space for vaccine patients, organised more nurses, more support staff, and drew up flow charts and detailed maps to ensure adequate social distancing and a proper post-jab supervision space.
They prepared modelling on demand – factoring in local population, demographics and the likelihood of other clinics participating – and estimated they could give 500 doses per day or 1,000 doses per day if needed, and even more if the rules allowed them to coordinate with other nearby GPs.
