Telehealth Standards Campaign

Keep telehealth operators honest

We need to empower Australians to navigate telehealth safely and confidently through a national telehealth quality standards framework.

Australia has some excellent telehealth providers – but there are also operators falling short on safety, quality and data management. Patients deserve to know the difference. It’s time to lift the standard, together.

Petition Statement

Telehealth is now a permanent and growing part of healthcare in Australia. Patients value the convenience and flexibility it offers, but they also deserve to know that the care they receive is safe, ethical and high quality.

We call on the Australian Government to introduce policies that ensure:

  • National Telehealth Standards: Develop a clear national framework to ensure quality, safety and equity in all telehealth services.

  • Safe and Ethical Care: Protect patients from poor-quality, unsafe or inappropriate care through clinical governance, provider accountability and ethical practice.

  • Transparency and Oversight: Require transparency around clinical and data governance, regulation, and complaint mechanisms for all telehealth providers operating in Australia.

Telehealth is here to stay. Let's ensure it works for patients and they know how to recognise quality telehealth providers.

Why this matters

Australians are increasingly relying on telehealth, but the current system lacks the safeguards needed to guarantee consistent, safe and patient-centred care:

  • There are no minimum national standards for telehealth services, which leads to wide variation in quality and safety.

  • Patients may not know what they should expect from quality telehealth providers, how their health information is managed, or how to raise concerns.

  • Some platforms are not well-integrated with the broader health system, which can fragment care and leave patients without follow-up.

Clear and consistent standards will give patients confidence that their care is high quality and that services are accountable.

What we're asking for

We urge the Australian Government to:

  • Establish national minimum standards: Develop a regulatory framework that sets clear expectations for safety and quality across all telehealth providers.

  • Ensure clinical governance: Require every telehealth service to have systems in place that support clinical leadership, safety oversight and ethical decision-making.

  • Support continuity of care: Encourage providers to share relevant health information with a patient’s regular care team to support better coordination and outcomes.

  • Mandate transparency: Make it easy for patients to understand who is involved in their care, what they are being charged, how their data is used, and how to seek help if something goes wrong.

  • Protect consumers: Create clear, accessible pathways for raising concerns, seeking redress, and ensuring services are held to account.
